Summary: In October 2012, the California Legislature passed AB 1575, a law that seeks to: (1) eliminate stigmatizing students and families who are unable to pay for certain school outings; and (2) establish a procedure for families to complain about the imposition of mandatory student fees. Pursuant to AB 1575, which went into effect on January 1, 2013, the District revised its uniform complaint procedure to allow families to demand the investigation of claims that the District is imposing mandatory educational fees. The District’s policy is based on CSBA’s updated model issued February 12, 2013.

• Parents have raised questions about the impact AB 1575 might have on their children’s programs and activities, including concerns about the loss of enrichment programs:
o How will MDUSD address this legislation to assist schools and provide support for collection of donations?
