Staff request approval to apply for the K-12 Strong Workforce Program 2019-20 grant to create, support, and expand high-quality career technical education programs and work-based learning opportunities at the K-12 level aligned with workforce development efforts and collaborative regional approach to increase the transition to post-secondary and career. Applications must be project based and occur within 30 months. Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) was awarded and is currently implementing the K-12 SWP grant for the 2018-19.
MDUSD proposes to submit two K-12 SWP grant applications; one individually and one in partnership with Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) Consortium. First, MDUSD proposes to maintain and expand a cohorted summer internship program for students and to develop two new pathways in alternative education sites. Services would target schools with at least 50% students identified as English Language Learners, low income or foster youth. The summer internships in partnership with Diablo Valley College will offer dual enrollment in a career counseling and work experience course. Students who complete the college course would be eligible for paid internships, using K12 SWP funds. The two new pathways in the alternative education program will be in Transportation and in the Building and Construction industry sectors. Both projects will embed these pathways with work based learning and post secondary alignment. The MDUSD grant would be for $560,000 and requires a 2:1 match from district grants and funds.
The second application is with the CCCOE Consortium which includes 3 community colleges and 11 school districts, and will target pathways in Health Care continuing the work started under the 2018-19 K-12 SWP grant. Strategies include: maintaining and strengthening pathways and aligning to post-secondary options and work-based learning opportunities. The consortium is applying for $2M; the required match will be 1:1. The total amount received and match required will depend on the award amount. Staff anticipates matching up to $100,000, making MDUSD eligible for $100,000 K-12 SWP funds.
