Summary: Staff requests approval to submit a grant to the California Department of Education for the 2013 Equipment Assistance Grant cycle for the following: Central Kitchen @ Loma Vista for a walk in refrigerator, Ygnacio Valley Elem. for a new serving line, Oak Grove Middle School for a walk in refrigerator, Concord High and YV High for food service portable units to allow for more meal service points.
Both Loma Vista and Oak Grove have existing walk in refrigerators that are over 40 years old and can no longer be repaired. Both sites have experienced increased meal production in recent years. The grants are limited to $20,000 per site. The walk-in refrigerators are estimated to cost $35,000 each.
YV Elementary school's current serving line is over 50 years old, is in poor condition and was not built to serve the volume we serve today. The grant is limited to $20,000 which is the estimated cost of the new line.
At Concord High and YV High we would be able to serve more students with meal service areas in other parts of the campus. These areas need electrical and data cabling as well as shelter for staff and equipment. The portable trailers would provide this at an estimated cost of $22,000 each including wiring costs.
Funding: Funding is provided through the California Department of Education
Fiscal Impact The total grant is for $100,000. Additional cost of the walk in refrigerators is estimated to be $30,000 which will be funded through the Cafeteria Fund. There is no impact to the General Fund.
Recommendation: Approve submission of the CDE 2013 Equipment Assistance Grant Application and acceptance if awarded.
