Summary:
|
Mt. Diablo Unified School District’s CARES (Collaborative for Academics, Recreation & Enrichment for Students) After School Program requests approval to apply for a five year competitive U. S. Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant for eight schools in the district. Mt. Diablo CARES currently operates after school programs at 15 district schools serving 2,700 K-12 students each day which are primarily funded by the California Department of Education’s (CDE) After School Education & Safety grant.
The CARES After School Program provides daily academic, enrichment, recreation, nutrition and leadership activities from the end of the regular school day until 6:00 p.m. during the school year and during the summer. The district has an opportunity to apply for two new high schools (Concord and Mt. Diablo High) and one elementary school (Westwood) to ensure more students have access to high quality after school programming. A total of 362 new students would receive daily after school services; Concord (139), Mt. Diablo (139) High and Westwood (84). Mt. Diablo High School was previously awarded a 21stCCLC grant from 2007-2012 and implemented a comprehensive after school program during that time. Since 2012 there has been a gap in services for students during the hours of 3:00-6:00 pm.
The district also intends to serve an additional 440 students at the existing CARES’s after school programs at Delta View (102), El Monte (84), Meadow Homes (110) and Sun Terrace Elementary (84) and El Dorado Middle (60), to ensure more students continue to have access to high quality after school programming. In addition, all eight schools are applying for the equitable access and family literacy funds available through the 21st CCLC grant to support literacy and access to students and families.
If awarded, the grant will serve 278 high school students, 60 middle, and 464 elementary students and will provide $1,646,000 per year ($295,000 each for Concord High and Mt. Diablo High schools, $135,000 for El Dorado Middle and $921,000 for the five elementary schools annually)for a total of $8,230,000 over five years.
