Summary: Director Greg Brown and the students of the Northgate High School Jazz Band I are congratulated for their first place triumph at the Next Generation Jazz Festival this spring, leading the band to an invitation to play this fall at the world-renowned Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

Participation in this festival is extremely competitive -- nearly 200 high school bands from around the country (mostly in the west) submit audition tapes, which are blind adjudicated by faculty at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston. Northgate High School Jazz Band I placed first of twelve finalist bands selected to compete with each other at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey.

This honor topped off a year of award after award for Greg Brown and this talented group of students:

* Individual jazz musicianship awards/honors for 12 different students (often multiple awards) from the 24-student band
* State Champions (First Place) for the California Alliance for Jazz
* Unanimous Superior (top) ratings from California Music Educators Association Jazz Festival
* Finalist and second place overall at Folsom Jazz Festival
Command Performance (top) at Santa Cruz Jazz Festival
* First Place at Campana Jazz Festival
* Greg Brown, 2013-2014 Finalist for MDUSD Teacher of the Year
* Greg Brown, CMEA Bay Section 2014 Outstanding Jazz Educator Award
