Summary: Staff is requesting that Engage New York be identified as an alternative core for sites to use as instructional materials for elementary mathematics. During the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years, a Curriculum Mapping Committee of 40 teachers worked with the Contra Costa Office of Education and piloted different Common Core materials to support mathematics instruction. The group came to consensus that Engage New York materials were aligned with the academic standards and that sites could use these materials, in addition to the 2009 Houghton Mifflin adoption, as an alternative core curriculum. Currently, the majority of elementary school sites in MDUSD are using ENY materials during a portion of their math instruction. In accordance with Education Code 60210, any alternative core instructional materials option must be formally approved by the School Board. Starting the 2018-19 school year, teachers, staff, and parents/guardians will begin researching the purchase of additional materials to support mathematics instruction at the elementary level.
