Summary: On December 1, 2012, District staff discovered that a laptop computer that potentially contained sensitive material had been stolen. Consequently, the District implemented Security Breach Notification protocols. The District had cyber liability insurance coverage through CSAC. A component of the coverage was legal assistance with security breach notification.

Baker Hostetler, a venerated law firm, was recommended as a nationally recognized expert in security breach notification law. Baker Hostetler provided valuable legal assistance not only in complying with California's security breach notification law, but also complying with similar regulations and 47 different jurisdictions. For their service they are billing the district $9,743.49. The District is responsible for paying this portion within the $100,000 self-insured retention on the cyber liability policy.
