File Attachment:
Summary: Staff requests authorization to submit a grant request to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for a Farm to School Planning Grant for the 2013-14 school year. The purpose of the USDA Farm to School Grant Program is to assist eligible entities in implementing farm to school programs that improve access to local foods in eligible schools. On an annual basis, USDA awards up to $5 million in competitive grants for training, supporting operations, planning, purchasing equipment, developing school gardens, developing partnerships, and implementing farm to school programs.

MDUSD in collaboration with community partners intend to apply for a planning grant which is intended for school districts or schools just starting to incorporate farm to school program elements into their operations. If awarded, the Farm to School grant will allow MDUSD to:
• Establish a Steering Committee that includes MDUSD and school administrators, Food & Nutrition Services staff, Student Achievement and School Support (SASS), staff teachers, parents, students and community partners.
• Complete an assessment of current District-wide food procurement and identify a realistic goal for increasing the procurement of locally sourced food and food products.
• Provide Education and Outreach to approximately five Pilot K-12 schools. Pilot educational activities may include but are not limited to school-wide assemblies and tastings, grade-specific field trips, garden/plant growing activities. Additional pilot efforts will also include activities in diverse subject areas including science, math, language arts, social sciences and electives that are explicitly developed to align with Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.
• Evaluate program effectiveness and develop an implementation plan for expansion and future funding.
If funded, the grant will provide $45,000 for one year.
Funding: Funding is provided by USDA Farm to School Grant for $45,000.
Fiscal Impact The grant is for $45,000 for one year. There is no unrestricted general fund contribution requirement. There is 25% in-kind match which will come from community partnerships and donations.
Recommendation: Approve submission of grant application and acceptance if awarded.
